My idea was to use timbres and organizations of pitch that are hopefully not typical and fresh to the ear. Movement I combines the structure and energy of the baroque period, but the rules of counterpoint are reversed (i.e. 5ths and 3rds and dissonant, 2nds, 4ths, and 7ths are consonant). Movement II features the sound of bowed vibraphone and col legno strings (played percussively with the wood side of the bow) and features a Persian rhythm and an altered Middle Eastern scale. Movement III features an unusual ten note scale of more than an octave (C Db E F Ab Bb B D Eb F#). These intervals spell out HAHAWHAHA (half, augmented, whole, etc.), which is part of the joke of this Scherzo. Movement IV was inspired by taking part in an Indonesian gamelan orchestra and is written loosely in that style. I used a pentatonic version of the pelog scale, although in Western turning.
